Over objections of many white people, this 1st grader became the first African American student to desegregate a southern elementary school.
Together they refused to give in to intimidation, bonding as central figures in the civil rights struggle.

Having lost touch with each other, they were reunited on the Oprah Winfrey Show in 1996 after 35 years.
