Always wanting to help people, at only 15 she opened a public school in NJ.
Nicknamed “Angel of the Battlefield,” she got supplies to the Union army & became a nurse during the Civil War.
After the war, she reunited soldiers with their families and found them a place to live.
After visiting Europe & working with the International Red Cross, she started the American Red Cross & was its first president but never took a salary.
“I may be compelled to face danger, but never fear it, and while our soldiers can stand and fight, I can stand and feed and nurse them.”
