Uncle Sam

Uncle Sam
Painting by James Montgomery Flagg, 1916, Public Domain
  • Established in 1812 as a symbol of U.S. government and American patriotism.
  • Generally believed the name came from businessman Samuel Wilson, who supplied beef to the Army and whose nickname initials “U.S.” were stamped on the barrels.
  • His present “look” became standard during World War I in the famous “I want YOU for the U.S. Army” recruitment poster.
  • The symbol is regularly used across popular culture in sports, film, music, and literature.
