  • Founded by John Adams and established April 24th, 1800, making it the oldest federal cultural institution in the U.S.
  • Considered the largest library in the world.
  • Contains over 167 million items (and counting!) in over 470 languages that would cover almost 850 miles of bookshelves!
  • Burned during the War of 1812 and moved to its present location in 1897.
  • Located in Washington, D.C., it is also home to the U.S. Copyright Office.
