Library of Congress

Founded by John Adams and established April 24^th, 1800, making it the oldest federal cultural institution in the U.S.
Considered the largest library in the world.
Contains over 167 million items (and counting!) in over 470 languages that would cover almost 850 miles of bookshelves!
Burned during the War of 1812 and moved to its present location in 1897.
Located in Washington, D.C., it is also home to the U.S. Copyright Office.
