• Issued the Proclamation of Neutrality, keeping the U.S. neutral in matters of conflict between France and Great Britain.  

• Founded the U.S. Navy.

• Owned over 300 slaves but put in his will to free them upon his wife Martha’s death.

• Set important standards for all future U.S. Presidents.
