  • 16th President and leader during the Civil War.
  • Nicknamed “Honest Abe,” he was a lawyer before entering politics.
  • Poor and self-educated as a child, he then lost his young son to illness.
  • His Gettysburg Address called for equal rights and liberty and his Emancipation Proclamation led to the 13th Amendment, which permanently abolished slavery.
