Became a deacon, priest, then made Bishop of Jerusalem. 
He spent much of his life fighting heretics and those that denied the divinity of Jesus Christ. 
Was exiled for 16 years by then Bishop Acacius who falsely claimed he had sold church relics, however his faith helped him forgive those who had wronged him. 
His writing and teaching focused on love and the healing power of forgiveness.
Created religious instruction called Catecheses, used for students leading up to their Baptism.
