Buddy Holly & Crickets

Buddy Holly & Crickets
Author: Coral Records, publicity portrait, modifications by GDuwen, circa 1957-58, public domain.

Formed 1957 in Texas

Formed by the headline singer with drummer Jerry Allison and bassist Joe B. Mauldin, named for these insects because they also make music!

Big hits included “Peggy Sue” and “That’ll Be The Day,” no. 39 on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Songs Of All Time.

On “the day the music died” in 1959, the singer tragically died in a plane crash with Richie Valens and “The Big Bopper.”
