American doctor who created the first polio vaccine, relieving millions terrified of the debilitating and deadly disease.

His novel research & testing was primarily funded by what is now the March of Dimes.

A “renaissance scientist,” he was hailed as a national hero and honored by President Eisenhower for the medical achievement.
