Devoted life to social justice and equal rights, peacefully protesting in the tradition of Gandhi and MLK.

Led many successful strikes, marches and protests to bring attention to workers’ rights.

Became community organizer after serving in the Navy, first leading the San Jose Community Service Organization (CSO) and then founding the National Farm Workers Association.

First-generation American son of farmworkers in Arizona, he was drawn to a life of activism. 

Called “one of the heroic figures of our time” by Senator Robert F. Kennedy.
