Died: 1305
Became a fearless leader during Wars of Scottish independence.  Helped defeat English army at Battle of Stirling Bridge, a great Scottish victory.
A Scottish knight, he was appointed Guardian of Scotland serving until his defeat at Battle of Falkirk in 1298.
In 1305, was captured & brought to King Edward I of England, who had him painfully executed for high treason & crimes against English.
Gained iconic status as hero of 15th century epic poem, the works by Sir Walter Scott & Jane Porter, plus the Academy Award-winning film “Braveheart” (1995) was about his life.
Said: “I could not be a traitor to Edward, for I was never his subject.”
