Died: 2005
American civil rights activist, called “first lady of civil rights” by Congress.
December 1, 1955, in Montgoery, AL, she refused to obey the bus driver’s order to give her seat up in colored section to a white passenger.  This defiant act & Montgomery Bus Boycott became important symbols of the modern Civil Rights Movement.
She organized & worked with civil rights leaders, including Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. & Edgar Nixon, local chapter Pres. of National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
Said: “I’ve learned… when one’s mind is made up, this diminishes fear; knowing what must be done does away with fear.”
