Richard the Lionheart

Richard the Lionheart
Artist: Merry-Joseph Blondel - oil on canvas
Born: 1157 in Oxford, UK
Died: 1199
Described as an extremely skilled warrior, showing no mercy to his enemies.
He’s one of few kings of England remembered by epithet (“LionHeart) rather than his “number” (the I).
Famously courageous, by age 16, he took command of his own army, crushing rebellions for his father.  Had 10-year reign & was the Central Christian Commander during the Third Crusade, had many victories vs. Muslim opponent, Saladin.
One time he was captured & held for ransom by the Duke of Austria.  Shot by a crossbowman (actually just a boy who he let go free in an act of forgiveness), his wound became infected & he died from it.
