Became first black President of South Africa, serving from 1994-99.
Spent 27 years in prison for opposing South African pro-apartheid govt.  Was a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary, working for the human rights of all people in Souh Africa.
Awarded 1993 Nobel Peace Prize for his work for peaceful end to apartheid regime, and laying the foundations for a new democratic South Africa.
Expressed devout belief in democracy and peacefully followed majority decisions even when deeply disagreeing with them.
Said: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
