American botanist, inventor and artist, Time magazine called him a “Black Leonardo” (DaVinci).
Recognized for his painting flowers & plants – his teacher encouraged him to study botany, becoming the first black student at Iowa State in 1891. 
Became nationally respected botanist for his many talents & achievements.  A visionary farmer teaching methods of crop rotation, promoted alternative crops to cotton, like peanuts & helped poor farmers become self-suffiicient.
He even designed a mobile classroom to take education out to farmers.
Said: “Education is the key to unlock the golden door of freedom.”
