American journalist & social activist, her life was committed to “works of mercy” including feeding the hungry, caring for the homeless & other vulnerable people in need.
Spoke out strongly about predatory capitalism & was critical of how our society idolizes wealth.
Had a reputation as political radical & her activism of civil disobedience led to arrests & she was imprisoned as member of suffragist Alice Paul’s nonviolent ‘Silent Sentinels’.
In 1933, co-founded Catholic Worker newspaper, was its editor for 47 years!
Said: “We must talk about Poverty, because people insulated by their own comfort lose sight of it.”
