Minister of African Methodist Episcopal Church and known as a great orator.
Organized 2 African American regiments for the Union Army during the Civil War.
Was first African American to serve in the Mississippi State Congress where he fought mainly for Civil Rights, including school & workplace integration for black students and workers.
Was praised by the press and people for his speeches and strong diplomacy in a tense political environment.
Said: “I am true to my own race. I wish to see all done that can be done for their encouragement, to assist them in acquiring property, in becoming intelligent, enlight ened, useful, valuable citizens.”
