Patron saint of students and translators.
Converted to Christianity after having lived recklessly and sinfully as a young man.
Was known for his wit and sarcasm which made him some enemies; but he took faith very seriously.
Performed extensive translation of Bible from Hebrew and Old Latin into contemporary language.
Said: “The friendship that can cease has never been real,” and “When the stomach is full, it is easy to talk of fasting.”
